August- the eve of the Fall editions of the fashion magazines. Soon mailboxes will groan with the weight of Vogue or Bazaar or InStyle….pages and pages of hysteria on how drastically fashion has changed in the last year and you better toss out everything in your closet and buy all new stuff. Or else.
I used to look forward to the Fall Fashion editions…I loved the new trends, the colorful layouts, the interesting articles on fashionable, successful women and how they lived their lives. I found inspiration in the new designs or in a twist to a classic.
That has all changed…at some point fashion magazines changed from reporting new trends that women could follow to hundreds of pages of advertising featuring teenage models balancing themselves on an elephant while wearing purple glitter eye shadow and not much else. The last time I wore purple glitter eye shadow I was dressed as a witch.
These days I refer to the Fall Fashion editions as the FFP- Fall Funny Pages. I’ll only pick one up if I happen upon one at the gym and I need a set of weights.
I realize that I sound like a cranky old lady. In my defense there are 58 million other women like me out there- over age 50- and we would really like something nice to wear. Preferably with sleeves. And we have the resources to buy the stuff. And we would actually purchase an old fashioned paper magazine to show us the new trends…assuming the trends featured sleeves. Are you listening Anna Wintour?
As for the fashion world’s hysteria over NEW NEW NEW…here are some photos from fashion magazines from the 1970’s… just sayin’…everything old is new again.
